The name Blackwood comes from the Mpingo tree. Native to Africa, it grows slowly and produces one of the hardest, most durable woods in the world, the wood fine instruments are made from. A quiet parallel to the work we do with families.
The org chart can never explain everything.
Every enterprising family is three circles laid over each other: family, ownership, and business. Most families live in the overlaps: the founder who owns and runs the business, the daughter who works in it but holds no shares yet, the son-in-law who works in the business and wants to run it one day. This is where the hard questions live. It is also where we work.
